A true cowboy, husband, father, sibling, grandfather, and friend, passed away at the age of 84 on January 20th, 2015.
Lorin Abarr, Sr., of Fallon, MT, was born on December 10th, 1930 in Billings, MT, near his family’s homestead in Dry Head. Beginning at the age of 14, Lorin worked on ranches and broke horses across the west. He was a true cowboy and horseman, considered by some of his time to be one of the best.
Lorin served in the U.S. Navy in an active war zone on an aircraft carrier during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and returned to his beloved home state of Montana to live the life that he loved most-that of a cowboy. He met the love of his life, Pauline Abarr, at a St. Patrick’s Day dance in 1969 in Jordan, MT, while working on the Binion Ranch. They had two children, Lorin Jr. and Lorena, who joined two children from Pauline’s previous marriage, Echo (Kampf) Riley and Craig Riley.
Lorin was known to be a skilled horseman and cowboy, a hard worker, and a loving family man. His love and kindness toward animals and stewardship of the land remained central aspects of his character throughout his life.
Lorin is survived by his wife, Pauline, his children, Echo, Craig, Lorin Jr., and Lorena, his brother Don, his sister Anna May, his grandchildren Felicia, Shalina, Tessa, Liam and Landon, and great grandson Toki. He was preceded in death by five siblings, his mother and father and one granddaughter.

I am sorry to learn of the loss of Mr. Abarr. Although I didn’t know him personally, it is always sad to learn a family has lost a loved one. I found encouraging articles on jw.org and maybe this website can help your family too. I hope Jehovah the ‘God of all comfort’ will help your family during this sad time. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4)

So sorry to hear about Lorin’s passing–I have so many memories of him and the times we spent on the Masser place at Circle and when Mom and Dad went to Australia and he and I took care of things, you brought baby Lorin home that time as I remember!!!! Time passes too quickly for us all, our thoughts are with your family at this time.
Lon Reukauf says
Lorin’s Family, I remember Lorin as a soft-spoken, hard-working young man when he worked for my Father Walt Reukauf and Uncle Art Reukauf on their ranches. He was a very responsible and highly regarded fellow who could always be counted on. Though he was a quiet man, he was a strong-willed man with firmly held beliefs. He lived a long successful life on his own terms. We always miss the memorable people the most. I sure wish the family comfort in this time of sorrow.
Susan Stockert & LeNora Folmer says
To Pauline & Family–Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. I know we only had the chance to meet Lorin a few times, but in those few times we had some good laughs. I pray that God will wrap his loving arms around you and help you through this sad time as I know he has wrapped his arms around Lorin and given him peace. Our Deepest Sympathy — LeNora & Susan
Wampy Smith & Nedra says
Our deepest sympathy to all the Abarr families. They were our neighbor in Dry Head (the Bert Smith place). Had a very nice visit with Don in Cody in 2008. There are not many “Dry Headers” left. I have some pictures taken at the Dry Head School and am not sure if Lorin is in them. Would love to have Anna May contact me (360) 675-5035 and see if we can put names with faces and share other Dry Head pictures.
We are so sorry for your loss.

Pauline and Family
Just heard about Lorin from Mary Boyce. I worked with Lorin at Binions twice in the 70s, never forgot him, everybody knows what a good hand he was, he was also one of the finest, most honest people you’ll ever get to know. He will be missed. Sorry for your loss.

John Langmore says
Dear Abarr Family,
Although I’m saddened by the news, I’m glad Wally let me know about Lorin’s passing so I can add my condolences and respects. Like Wally, I worked with Lorin at the Binion Ranch two different summers. He was the consummate soft-spoken, tough-as-nails, hard-working cowboy. I will never forget trying to keep up with him as he headed out at a long trot on his big Appaloosa horse, “Thunderfoot”. For forty years I have held Lorin up as the personification of everything people admire about cowboys. I hope you take comfort knowing he is admired by many. My sincere sympathies.
John Langmore (Austin, Texas)

Thanks so much to all of you for your kind words. My dad was indeed an honest, fair, and kind man. If anyone has any copies of photos that you could share with us, we would treasure them and preserve them for Landon Abarr, Dad’s grandson, who just turned 5.
