We lost the matriarch of our family. She was our thread that connected the present to the past. Margaret (Marge) Ann Hughes was born December 12, 1937, in Hebron, North Dakota to Louis and Mary Thomas. She was the fifth of 10 children.
In 1956 she was swept off her feet by a handsome sailor, Ora Walter Hughes. They solidified their love for each other on May 10, 1958, in Beulah, North Dakota. They would go on to have five daughters and one son together. Ora Hughes passed away in a tragic accident on August 25, 1976. He remained the love of her life. Although Elvis Presley became a close second.
She moved to Williston, North Dakota in 1981, where she would become the Assistant Manager for Kmart for 20+ years. In 2013, she moved to Great Falls, Montana to live in “retirement”. Anyone who knows Marge will tell you she never retired as she fulfilled her role as the treasurer for her HOA.
She will be dearly missed by her aunt Clemtine Farrell, her sisters Delaphine Thomas, Amy Dietrich, Mary Dietrich, Frances Ball, Pauline Thompson, Linda Sailor, and her brother Jerome Thomas. She leaves a hole in the hearts of her children LaDonna (Leland) Wetzel, South Dakota, DaLonna (Patrick) Grissom, Colorado, Madonna (Scott) Hall, Alaska, Monty Hughes, Ohio, Trixie (Johnnie) Smith, Montana, and Tracey (Doug) Goerndt, Montana. She leaves behind the legacy of 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
She will be greeted in Heaven by her husband Ora Walter Hughes, parents Louis & Mary Thomas, sisters Josephine Plummer, Cecilia Orth, infant brother Valentine, and great grandson Kalel Fall.
Rosary service will be held August 24, 2023, 6:00 PM at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be held August 25, 2023, 11:00 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 120 Montana Ave, Miles City, Montana with a luncheon to follow. I was deeply saddened to find out about Marge’s passing. She was my Moms best friend and they let me sit in on conversations. I loved hearing her stories about Ory and her family again and again! She was there for me when I said goodbye to my Mom. A true friend to the end. She was an incredible woman. I almost got to see her one last time before she moved to MT. I can hear her voice and that great laugh. My daughter even had a heart for Marge and even visited her in HS. Much love to each and everyone of Margaret’s family, LaNells daughter Patsy & granddaughter Carissa
Carissa says
I knew Marge through my grandma, LaNell Ross. She had no obligation to welcome her friends granddaughter into her home, but she did, with open arms. She was always so very kind and warm. I can still hear her voice and see her smile. I hold a special place for her in my heart and I am so very sorry for your loss.
