Marie Christine Hafla, age 95, of Miles City passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Marie was born on October 20, 1916 in Miles City, Montana, the daughter of Ernest Walfrid and Anna Olivia (Johnson) Peterson. She grew up on a ranch at Stone Shack, Montana and graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City, Montana in 1934. She received her BA in Education from Eastern Montana College in Billings in August of 1937. She taught school in Custer and Garfield Counties, Montana. She married Joe Hafla of Cohagen in 1937. After three years of working for a rancher, they moved to their farm/ranch near Cohagen, Montana and lived there until 1992 when they moved to Miles City, Montana. They raised six children.
Marie was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Marie was a volunteer at Holy Rosary Health Center including the traditional bell ringing. She loved being with children and spending time with her family. She enjoyed music, gardening and working in her flowerbeds. Marie could always make something out of nothing from making prom dresses to her sons clothing out of whatever she had around the house. You could always count on Marie to have a meal when you stopped by the house. She always helped throughout the years substituting at the country school even her days in the nursing home she helped tutor children. Marie always had timeless energy to listen to and mentor her children and grandchildren. Marie worked alongside Joe on the farm driving tractor, feeding or haying and still found time to cook a homemade meal. Her family will always treasure the daily log she kept throughout the years of what she did, how much she spent or just her daily experiences.
Marie is survived by two sons: Donald Luke (Margaret) Hafla of Cohagen, MT; Timothy Joseph (Cheri) Hafla of Cohagen, MT; four daughters: Patricia Ann Campbell of Powder River, MT; Irene Claire (Jimmy) Wells of Great Falls, MT; Jane Marie (Ray) Rath of Miles City, MT; and Linda Alice (Kenneth) Rich of Sand Springs, MT; a brother, Earl (Lauretta) Peterson of Fairfield, MT; a sister, Dorothy (Bill) Kato of Spokane, WA; thirteen grandchildren, twenty six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, two sisters, three brothers, a son-in-law, three grandchildren and one grand son-in-law.
