Mary J. Baker, age 104, of Jordan passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Garfield County Nursing Home in Jordan.
Mary was born in Billings, Montana, the first child of Andrew “Fritz” and Laura “Irene” (Woods) Pattison. They made their home on Reservation Creek in Western Rosebud County. Mary began school at the Howard School in the Yellowstone Valley. Mary went to the Sabra School finishing her schooling through the eighth grade at Pleasant Hill School and graduating from Rosebud High School. Following her schooling, she worked for the Luhman’s Ranch at Rosebud, and it was there that she met Frank Baker. The two were married on March 3, 1938. Following their marriage, they moved to Northern Garfield County, about five miles north of their future home. They had a small acreage farm where they did some farming with a plow and horses and later with a tractor. They purchased a small herd of cattle and Mary had chickens and sold eggs to the local stores in exchange for groceries. They had a few milk cows and they sold cream and butter for extra money. Mary and Frank were blessed with three children: Sallene, Jim, and Diane. Frank passed away at the age of 58 and Mary continued to live at the ranch for several years. After leaving the ranch, Mary moved to Miles City and lived at Eagles Manor for several years. She later moved into the Garfield County Nursing Home where she remained until the time of her death.
Mary was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the VFW Auxiliary and helped 4-H members as a leader with their projects. Mary was an avid crafter. She quilted and crocheted many Afghans through the years. Mary loved to travel and took several trips throughout the United States. She also enjoyed a trip to Australia and an Alaskan Cruise.
Mary is survived by her three children: Sallene (Everett) Bowland, Jim (Mardrie) Baker and Diane (Mike) Williams; seven grandchildren: Connie Kircshten, Dave Bowland, Anita Bowland, Larry Baker, Julie Paschke, Shana Skartved and Bill Brooks; sister Elizabeth “Tootie” Mitzkus and 14 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, and siblings Andrew Jr. “Bud” Pattison, Margie “Midge” Jarrett, Jan Hart, and Tom Pattison, son-in-law Ed Brooks.
