Hortense M. Rolf age 91, of Miles City passed away on January 16, 2015 at her home near Miles City.
Hortense was born on January 2, 1924 at Mizpah, MT; the daughter of Ignatz and Marie (Beilage) Ostendorf. She grew up on her parent’s ranch on the Powder River. Hortense attended Riverview School and graduated from Custer County High School in 1940. After high school she attended Kinman Business University in Spokane, WA. Hortense worked for an insurance company and as a Civil Service Secretary. She moved to Seattle, WA shortly before she met Leonard Rolf in the winter of 1945. Hortense and Leonard were married at the Boniface Church on September 6, 1947 in Anaheim, CA. They moved to Miles City and bought a ranch in April of 1951. She enjoyed living, working, and raising her family on the ranch! Together they ranched for the remainder of their lives and raised four children: Gayle, Walter, Wayne, and Kay. Hortense always raised a big garden and did a lot of canning. She enjoyed watching birds, shoveling cake into the pickup, traveling, making Lemon Meringue Pie’s, but most importantly she loved her family. Hortense was a member of Cowbelles, a cooking leader in 4-H and a member of the South Eastern Montana Fiddlers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers: Ted, Walter & Benno; and a daughter Gayle. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Leonard; her children: Walter (Shirley) Rolf of Miles City, Wayne (Melissa) Rolf of Miles City, Kay (Marc) Aberg of Miles City, and son-in-law Bud (Mel) Peterson of Miles City; her grandchildren: Staci (Tye) Ketchum, Tonya (Brady) Liles, Erik (Sarah) Peterson, Seth Peterson, Gary (Amber) Rolf, Ryan (Nicole) Rolf, Shandy Aberg, Marci (Emmett) Mollman, Lauren (Graham) Kehrer and her great grandchildren: Elaina & Augustus; Tristen, Reese, & Novalee; Harrison; Haden; Kinley & Remy; and Ali.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 23, 2014 with the family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2014 at 1pm at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the Custer County Cemetery.
