Polly Nichols, 93, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2023, surrounded by her family. Polly was born in Inkom, Idaho, on December 22, 1929, to Beulah and Willard Campbell. The family moved to Pocatello, and then to Hysham, Montana, where she graduated from high school. She met Ozzie Nichols and he swept her off her feet. They were married on February 28, 1947. They lived in Hardin, Montana, where Ozzie owned a Conoco station. Their first two daughters, Ranae and Carolyn, were born during that time. Due to his dad’s failing health, they moved out to Sarpy Creek and two more daughters, Linda and Cynde, were born. In 1983, they moved to Hysham, where they resided until 2014.
Polly was a member of the Hysham Women’s Club, Red Hats, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Hysham Community Presbyterian Church. She was active in the community, loved a good game of bridge and enjoyed the Wine and Roses group. She was well known for being a great cook and “Polly’s cinnamon rolls”. She and Ozzie had a beautiful yard and rock gardens. She was a wonderful seamstress and sewed many dresses for her girls. She loved to read, play dominos, and do the New York Times crossword puzzle.
Polly was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Ozzie, her three sisters, Esther, Bertha, Dorothy, and her brother, Orville, grandson Cory Topness, granddaughter Miranda Thomas, one niece, Yvonne (Wood) Donaldson, great-granddaughter Kendall Chase and great-grandson Brett Staley.
Survivors include four daughters, Ranae (Dave) Wanchena, Carolyn (Dick) Topness, Linda (Rich) Thomas, and Cynde (Arlin) Cole; two nephews, Paul and Duane Wood; seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
We want to thank Dr. Neal Sorenson for his many years of caring for mom. We sincerely appreciate the care at Morningstar Senior Living and from Compassus Hospice. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hysham Community Presbyterian Church, Compassus Hospice of Billings or charity of your choice.
