Roy Charles Slusher, age 96, of Miles City passed away on Monday, September 17, 2012 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Roy was born in Robinson, North Dakota on May 11, 1916, the son of Roy Charles and Linda (Castle) Slusher. He grew up and attended schools in North Dakota. He enlisted in the United States Army on September 3, 1942 and was honorably discharged on November 19, 1945. He moved to Miles City and worked as a driver and salesman for dairy. Roy married Dorothy Root on October 9, 1957 in Miles City, Montana. Roy worked as park superintendent for 23 years, retiring in 1980. An entry to milescity.com in 2006 mentioned “Roy Slusher – Retired Director of Parks & Recreation. A most outstanding man who did an excellent job of maintenance and upkeep of our parks…When Mr. Slusher was around, Denton Field was pristine.” During winters of his parks and recreation employment, Roy would don iceskates to “superintend” the escapades at the old high school “bowl” skating rink. The naming of the Roy Slusher Athletic Field in Bender Park acknowledged Roy’s years of service with Miles City’s parks.
Roy enjoyed gardening, feeding birds and especially enjoyed reading. Roy and Dorothy also loved to travel and enjoyed eating out. Going out for coffee was part of the retirees’ daily routine, and Roy especially enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens Center for billiards with his “pool bunch.” Roy was a member of the Elks for 66 years, member of the Jaycees, and was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday School and serving as an elder for many years.
Roy is survived by his wife Dorothy Slusher of Miles City, MT; and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

I haven’t lived in Miles City for about 40 years. Yet I have clear memories of Mr. Slusher. I recall how toasty he kept the boxcar warming house at the skating rink. He was a fabulous skater and would shovel the rink while skating. I thought he was such a nice man who sometimes wore a tie under this one-piece brown coveralls snowsuit. My prayers are with you all.
Robin Hutton says
I was saddened to learn of Roy’s passing. Some of my fondest meomories are skating with my Dad (Lu) when I was little. Dad always praised Roy and his pristene ice rink. I am sure that is why Dad skated at least once a year, every year until he too passed. Roy and his rink hold a special place in my heart.
