Stanley Hellod passed away December 23, 2013, at his residence in Chapel Court, at St. John’s Lutheran Ministries, in Billings, Montana.
Stan was born on April 15, 1918, on the Hellod Family Homestead on Red Lodge Creek. Stanley was the son of Samuel Hellod and Thora Olava Loyning. He later moved with his family to Glendive, Montana. He enlisted in the United States Navy as a gunner in World War II. After his military life, Stan worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad as a Conductor and retired after 36 years. He spent those railroad years in Forsyth where he was instrumental in getting television implemented.
After his retirement from the railroad, Stan moved to the Bitterroot Valley where he made his home for 32 years. There he met many wonderful friends in Hamilton and enjoyed helping others. Stan moved to Billings in March of 2011 where he could be closer to family. Stan resided at St. John’s Lutheran Ministries and became friends to many and a place he called “home”.
Stan was active and a life member in many organizations but his love for the Shriner’s carried him to being a past Master and a mentor to others entering into the organization. He was especially dedicated to helping children and assisted children in getting help from the Shriner’s Hospitals. Stan was very proud of being a Shriner and loved his Brothers.
Surviving is Stan’s sister, Ingeborg “Inga” Morris Connolly of Great Falls, MT. Stan is also a wonderful Uncle to Patricia “Pat” (Kenneth) Strand of Great Falls, MT, Robert “Bob”(Gail) Morris of Ulm, MT, Dave (Terria) Hellod, and Sandra “Sandy”(Larry) Oium of Billings and many great nephews, and nieces, and many wonderful cousins in Norway. Stan also leaves extended family Penny and Blackie Helms, Ida Palmer Gruell and Kenneth and Mary Palmer, Susie Geddes of Colorado and special friend Janet Young.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Sigurd Hellod, and great niece, Lisa Sue Strand.

My father, Donald McAllister, worked with Mr. Hellod on the NP. He always spoke very highly of him. He was a well respected man.
Cheryl (Loyning) Gangstad says
I am Sidney Loyning’s (Carrie Loyning’s son) daughter, Stanley was my dad’s cousin.
We lived in Forsyth in the 50’s and got to know Stanley. It was always a joy to go with dad to visit Stanley when he was home. My sister, Maralyn, and I were always awed at the player piano. I saw him a few years ago when Tove Hovland, our cousin from Norway was visiting. Enjoyed Inga’s tales about life on the ranch. I would like to hear more. JB Loyning (Henry’s oldest son) is trying to piece some things together about those days. My phone number is 406-697-4834. My address is 2841 Parkhill Drive, Billings, Mt 59102
Please accept my deepest sympathy. May your family and friends have many good memories to honor the life of Stanley.

Joan Lønning Abbott says
Our dear cousin Stanley. Stanley was my dad’s, Franklin Lonning, 1st cousin. Franklin was Jakob Sjursson Årtun (aka Jacob Lonning) son. Carrie Loyning was my granddad’s sister, as was Thora, (Stanley’s mother). Lots of variations on the spelling of the last name, as the name was changed when they arrived in America. Franklin was born in Glendive.
Stanley & his sister Inga (Amanda), visited my dad in California, many times. Pat Strand, his niece, brought Stanley & Inga to Oregon, in 2010, to visit us and Tove Hovland, who was visiting from Norway. This was all a surprise to Tove. What a great reunion! We all ate a Norwegian meal of fancy open faced sandwiches & Waldorf Salad, (which is Norwegian). Then Pat brought them back for Syntennde Mai celebration at our local Sons of Norway Sonja Lodge. That was so much fun to listen to the Norsemen sing. Tove had tears in her eyes, it was so lovely. Then last June we went to Great Falls for Inga’s 100th birthday party. I danced with Stanley for the last time.
Stanley & Franklin, were both cut from the same cloth. Both dashingly good looking men, both had careers in transportation, both in the Masonic Lodge & big time Shrine brothers. My dad kept a piano at his house, just so Stanley could play it. I loved hearing Stan’s voice, as it sounded so much like my granddad’s. I’m certain there was a big celebration in heaven, when Stanley met up with Franklin & Sig.
He was the finest cowboy I have ever known. So very generous of his love. He will always be remembered as a kind generous man.
With Our Love,
Joan & Steve Abbott
