Verne William Latimer “Bill”, age 85, of Terry, MT, passed away on January 23, 2013 at the Prairie Community Hospital.
Bill was born on June 20, 1927 the son of Verne and Grace (Otilla) Latimer in Portland, OR. Bill spent his early years in Portland where he attended grade school and high school. In 1946 Bill enlisted in the United States Army where he served for three years until he was honorably discharged in 1949. After his time in the Army he began working for Bingham Pump Company in Portland as a draftsman. After working there for several years he began a new endeavor working for the Army Core of Engineers as a draftsman. Bill’s job eventually moved him to Fair Banks, AL where he continued working until his retirement.
Bill truly enjoyed living in Alaska and being in the outdoors; he was an avid mountain climber and was a member of the Mazama Mountain Climbing Club. Bill was awarded a 16 peak plaque for the mountains he had climbed. Bill eventually moved to Terry with his brother John after suffering a stroke in 2008. Bill enjoyed his time in Terry and all the people who helped him from the Terry Community Hospital.
Bill enjoyed hiking, cross country skiing, mountain climbing, being outdoors and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his brother, John Latimer, of Terry, MT; one sister, Arlene Vollendroff, of Portland, OR and two nieces, Elizabeth Smith and Betty Lozinger. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ethel Terkar.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013 from 1 – 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Terry, MT. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Community Presbyterian Church in Terry. Burial will follow in the in the Prairie County Cemetery. Bill always engouraged me even when he didn’t know it. I worked for Bill at Prairie Nursing Home and enjoyed every minute I spent with him. I will miss him greatly.
